Waterloo, Illinois was the first permanent American settlement in the entire Northwest Territory starting in the 1780’s. Waterloo was named for the beautiful spring it provided for thirsty and weary travelers. The French settlers who traveled between Cahokia and Kaskaskia called the place of this spring, Bellfontaine. By 1800, Bellfontaine had a population of 286.
Emery Peters Rogers came to the area in 1816. In 1820, Rogers opened a mill, a quarry and a store. The neighbors who moved in around the store came to call the area Peterstown. Over time the two communities developed on either side of a creek; Peterstown on the north side and Bellfontaine on the south side. Legends in Waterloo speak of serious rivalry between the two settlements.
One such legend tells of an Irishman by the name of Charles Carroll who came to the area. Carroll observed the two communities and their rivalry. Then, he built his house on one side of the creek and his barn on the opposite side. To the shocked men of Peterstown and Bellfontaine, he is reported to have said, “It won’t be Bellfontaine, and it won’t be Peterstown, but begorra, I’ll give ye’s both your Waterloo.” This all happened in the year 1818.
The town of Waterloo grew in the 1840’s when the German settlers came to the area. Many of the historical buildings of the city reflect the German heritage brought by these settlers to Waterloo. In 1849, with its new population growth, the people of Waterloo received a charter as a town. The charter was amended in 1857 and again in 1859, until finally in 1888, Waterloo was chartered as a city.
Waterloo, Illinois found its name on the National Register of Historic Places after 1978 when its historical significance was recognized. The City of Waterloo has a sister city with Porta Westfalica, West Germany. The Sister Cities program in Waterloo has been honored by Reader’s Digest six times. The City of Waterloo hosts an annual festival called “Porta Westfalica Fest” as an honor to its sister city.
Today, the people of Waterloo are entertained every Tuesday evening throughout the summer months by the Waterloo Municipal Band. The band plays at the Courthouse Square on the corner of Main Street and Third Street in Waterloo. For more entertainment, the people of Waterloo can see the Monroe Actors Stage Company. This amateur theater troupe presents dramatic productions throughout the year. They can be seen at the Capital Theater on Main Street in Waterloo.
